Ynys Gwydr: Island of Glass
A Community Opera Created in Merthyr Tydfil.
Wales’ tenth century history was transformed into a community opera. The ambitious performance brought professional performers, Merthyr College students and community members together on one stage. The opera was written in a “pasticcio” style where new words were fitted to a “mash up” of existing Handel tunes.
The piece was entirely created by the community with local people writing the libretto, creating images, making costumes, recreating artefacts, collecting resource material and performing in the opera. The research and performance phases received funding from the Heritage Lottery and Arts Council Wales. The project was also supported by Amgueddfa Cymru National Museum Wales, Cardiff University, Theatr Soar and Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council.

Amser Te (Tea Time) was the theme given for a year of artistic activities organized by Theatr Soar and funded by Arts Council of Wales from Spring 2012 to Spring 2013.
Amser Te was chosen as a theme due to Tea’s social standing and importance in our communities and in our Chapels. The theme gave us a platform to weave the history and traditions of Merthyr together with more contemporary traditions.
As part of the programme of activities, many art forms were used; Drama, dance and visual art mainly, and everything came together in two live exhibitions in Theatr Soar. And of course, we all had tea at the end! Here’s a taste of what Drama@Soar did as part of the exhibitions.

Film in a Day
In February 2012 two exciting days of activities were created in Theatr Soar. Members of Drama@Soar were given a challenge to create a Play in a Day and to perform that play at the end of it. They were then challenged to turn that Play into a Film – in a day! Zoom Cymru came to Theatr Soar to create the film and here’s what they produced:
During the Summer holidays in 2011, only 6 weeks after the official launch of Theatr Soar, we held 2 week intensive Drama woorkshops. This was the beginning of Drama@Soar. The work created was performed at the end of the 2 weeks. A team of proffessionals led the activities, Helen Woods, Ian Davies and Einir Siôn and the work created was of an exceptionally high standard. What a perfect way to launch a long term plan by Theatr Soar, to give high quality creative experiences to the people of Merthyr…and to do this bilingually.
